Brain, Your Amazing Brain

In the Science Times section of the October 1998 New York Times comes an article which discusses the effect placebos have on healing. The article talks about the ability of a person's opinion on healing to result in healing. Based on the article, scientists are now beginning to understand some of the brain functions that could clarify a few of the results gotten from placebo treatments. Several drugs that are ultimately proved to be ineffective may attribute their original success to the placebo effect.

The Times write-up procedes to discuss a study in Texas in which a number of patients with similar knee problems went through three kinds of surgical care. One group had their knee joints scraped, one group had the knee joint washed, and one group had incisions meant to appear like the other procedures however nothing else was done. Surprisingly 2 yrs later, the group which had nothing (but believed that they had surgery) experienced exactly the same pain relief as did those that really had surgery.

From a chiropractic point of view, the placebo effect can be simply described. Placebos only work because people think they're getting some type of actual care, so they heal themselves. Fundamental to chiropractic care is the idea that the body heals itself. Chiropractors rely on this self-healing capacity for the results we see. For more than 100 years, chiropractors have comprehended that the human body heals itself. We believe that what a doctor need to do is eliminate any disturbance to that healing capability. In chiropractic, we know that the most typical type of interference to the body's capability to heal itself is a spinal subluxation.

A subluxation happens when one or more of the bones of your spine (vertebrae) get out of position and put pressure on or inflame spinal nerves. Spinal nerves are the nerves which come out from in between each of the bones in your spine. This pressure or irritation on the nerves then causes those nerves to malfunction and interfere with the signals traveling over those nerves. The result of subluxation is a decrease in the body's ability to function properly and heal itself. By correcting subluxations, chiropractors allow the body's healing ability to function at a higher level and healing is the natural result.
