Chiropractic Care Helps Body Physiology and DNA Repair

The March 7, 2005 Medical News Today revealed a study which demonstrates that chiropractic assists body physiology and DNA repair. The study, published in the February 18, 2005 Journal of Vertebral Subluxation Research, (JVSR), was a collaboration among chiropractors and researchers at the University of Lund in Sweden. In this study, researchers discovered that chiropractic care might affect fundamental physiological processes affecting oxidative stress and DNA repair.

The article observed that serum thiols are main antioxidants. Increased antioxidant levels may serve as a means of measuring individual health status and DNA repair enzyme activity, which has been proven to correlate with lifespan and aging. In the study, researchers measured serum thiol levels in 21 patients, most of these having a number of health issues or pain, who had gone through short-term chiropractic care. Researchers also examined a group of 25 asymptomatic patients that had gone through long-term chiropractic care. Those results were compared to a control group of 30 individuals who hadn't received any chiropractic care.

The study results indicated that, as the researchers anticipated, individuals who have been in pain had the lowest antioxidant levels. However, those individuals who have been under long term chiropractic care had statistically substantial higher antioxidant levels compared to both the short term patients with pain, along with those without pain who did not receive chiropractic care.

One of the authors, Dr. Christopher Kent, explained, "Moving through life, we all experience physical, chemical, and emotional stress. These types of stresses affect the function of the central nervous system. We hypothesized these disturbances in nerve function could affect oxidative stress and DNA repair on a cellular level." Kent continued, "Oxidative stress, metabolically generating free radicals, is now a broadly accepted theory of how we age and develop disease."
